Red Root
(New Jersey Tea)
Red Root (New Jersey Tea)
Alleviate Respiratory complaints
New Jersey Tea (Red Root) has strong expectorant properties and has been traditionally used by the Native Americans to cure respiratory disorders like whooping cough, asthma, cough and bronchitis. When taken as a tea Red Root helps to thins mucus that allows it to be expelled more easily from the respiratory tracts.
As an antispasmodic it can calm the muscle spasms involved in chronic coughs. While a cough is part of the body’s healing response allowing irritants and mucus to be removed from the body, it may become long-lasting and non-productive.
Cleanse Oily Skin and Combat Acne
Red Root is astringent and antibacterial in nature which makes it supportive to use on oily skin susceptible to spots or acne.
Brew a Red root tea and allow it to cool, then dip a cotton ball into the tea and wipe the astringent over your skin. Since you need a small amount of this astringent each day, you could brew tea to drink and then leave a small amount in the bottom of your cup to use as a skin cleanser. In this way Red Root can help to support your body on the inside and on the outside.
Ease Headache
Red Root has relaxant, nervine and sedative properties, which help to comfort painful headaches. Its relaxant properties helps to relieve the tension and its nervine qualities calm the nerves that are firing off pain signals. Strong dose of Red Root tincture can help you to relax and fall asleep, and sleep often offers a cure to a headache as it allows a tense body and mind to relax.
When headaches are caused due to cold or sinus infection, Red Root will offer extra help because it can relieve the congestion causing the pain and also work directly on the pain in the meantime. If you suffer from frequent headaches, a daily serving of Red Root Tea, tincture or capsules may prove very helpful in reducing the amount of headaches that you suffer from.
Digestive health
New Jersey Tea has a long history as a digestive aid and is used to treat several digestive disorders. Taken as a tea or a tincture it can relieve diarrhea, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, gas and bloating. Its antispasmodic properties allow the muscles of the digestive tract to function efficiently, and that smooth function helps to eliminate many common digestive complaints. Its astringent and antibacterial properties are helpful when facing diarrhea.
Treat a Sore Throat
New Jersey Tea helps to combat the bacteria that are responsible for a sore throat or tonsillitis and helps to reduce the painful inflammation present.
In addition to drinking several cups of tea each day or using the tincture or capsules for overall immune system support, you may also gargle with New Jersey Tea to put its healing properties directly in contact with the area that needs to be healed.
Gargle can be made with cooled tea, or with a tablespoon of decoction added to a small glass of water. Strong tincture dilution would be effective remedy for a sore throat. Gargle several times a day until the infection has cleared.
Lymphatic System Support
Red Root is essential to support the spleen and the rest of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a major part of the immune system, and its smooth functioning is important to good health and to guarantee fast recovery from infections.
Lymph nodes store infection killing white blood cells and route them to where they are required. If the lymphatic system is slow or inflamed these white blood cells can’t do their job correctly.
When you are sick, you will be confronted with swollen lymph nodes which are tender and painful. This accumulation of lymph fluid is a sign that your lymph system is under pressure and could use some support. But the best thing to do is to take an active approach and support your lymphatic system every day, before illness manifests.
Potential Antibacterial property
Many homeopathic practitioners believe that red root has antibacterial abilities. This claim relates to its organic compound content including high concentrations of tannins, lignins and ceanithene which are supposed to be antibacterial phytochemicals.
These phytochemicals are supposed to have been observed effectively treating sexually transmitted disease like syphilis. It can also be used as an effective mouth wash to treat a number of oral complaints such as canker sores, gum disease and tooth decay.
General Detoxification Purposes
You can use Red Root as a regular detoxification aid. Modern lifestyles and diets expose us to many pollutants and chemicals that have an adverse effect on the body. The lymphatic system can become overloaded trying to remove these elements from the body, so supporting this system is crucial. When the lymphatic system is struggling to function well, you are more prone to succumb to infections.
Another important organ that is essential for detoxification is the liver, and Red Root is able to support the healthy functioning of the liver. Use Red Root Tea for a mild detox and use the decoction or tincture when you need more help.
Shrink Hemorrhoids
Herbs with astringent properties are an effective treatment for hemorrhoids. As we have mentioned before red root has astringent properties. Thus Red Root can be used to calm and heal both internal and external hemorrhoids.
Drink Red Root tea each day or use the decoction, tincture or capsules, for internal healing, and use the cooled tea to apply to external hemorrhoids several times a day, to stop bleeding and reduce pain and swelling. Just soak a cotton ball in the astringent liquid and gently press against the hemorrhoids.

Black Tea
Reduced Risk Of Diabetes
According to studies, long-term intake of black tea may help lower fasting blood glucose levels. As a result, it may help reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes.
It has been observed in studies that people who drink black tea for a prolonged period have a 70% low chance of experiencing a spike in blood sugar levels. It means there is a lesser risk of developing type-2 diabetes. Studies suggest that women drinking more than or equal to 4 cups of tea per day have a 30% reduced chance of getting type 2 diabetes than other women.
Going by the above data, it is safe to say that black tea may help prevent the risk of type-2 diabetes.
Cancer Prevention
Black tea is high in theaflavins, an antioxidant that can help destroy abnormal cells in the body. The free radicals present in our body can create significant damage by turning normal body cells into cancerous ones. The antioxidant content in black tea is so high that it keeps the free radicals at bay. In addition, it plays a significant role in the prevention of substantial cancer types like skin, stomach, ovarian, and breast cancer.
A controlled study in Uruguay suggests that tea consumption decreases the incidence of lung cancer in male cigarette smokers.
Consumption of black tea also aids in increasing globulin hormones in females throughout their menstrual cycle.
Improved Heart Functions
Black tea includes flavonoids, which help prevent plaque accumulation in the arteries. As a result, it helps reduce cardiac stress. Furthermore, caffeine in black tea dilates the blood vessels of the body which helps increase blood flow to all body parts. The speedier blood circulation helps provide more oxygen to the organs and tissues.
A randomised study discovered that consuming black tea for 12 weeks decreased triglyceride levels by 36%, blood sugar levels by 18%, and the LDL/HDL plasma ratio by 17%.
Another research reveals that those who drank three cups of black tea daily had an 11% lower chance of getting heart disease.
Stress Relief
Drinking black tea reduces cortisol (a stress hormone) production and helps in normalising it. Furthermore, black tea is rich in an amino acid called I-theanine which eases stress. Researchers at the University College London (UCL) discovered that people who drank tea de-stressed faster than those who drank a tea substitute.
Drinking black tea also helps in soothing your mind and allows you to concentrate.
Protection Against Bad Bacteria
The flavonoids and polyphenols found in black tea have antibacterial properties. Several studies suggest that the consumption of black tea helps lower the risk of Helicobacter pylori infection, a bacterial infection that affects the stomach.
Moreover, it also prevents unnecessary sweating, a sign of bacterial infection. Doctors and health professionals say that applying chilled black tea bags to razor bumps, burns, itchiness, and redness can provide comfort.
Better Digestive Health
Black tea contains many tannins and other chemicals that positively affect digestive health and relaxes the system.
The anti-inflammatory properties of black tea help cure digestive problems. In addition, it helps combat stomach ulcers and provides a therapeutic effect on gastric and intestinal illness.
Research published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine looked at the effects of black tea on diarrhoea in 60 people aged 2 to 12. The randomised controlled study found that black tea has antidiarrhoeal effects and can help relieve stomach pain.
Black tea even aids the growth of good gut bacteria, thereby improving gut health.
Stronger Bones
The flavonoids present in black tea help keep the bones healthy, thereby preventing fractures.
Minerals like potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus keep the bones stronger and reduce the chances of developing arthritis and other joint issues. In addition, a study suggests that women who drink more than or equal to three cups of tea per day have a lower risk of rheumatoid arthritis.
The phytochemicals present in tea help reduce inflammation in the muscles, especially joints and allows easy mobility. Drinking black tea also leads to greater bone mineral density.
Black Tea Beneficial for Good Oral Health
Polyphenols like flavonoids, tannins, and catechins present in black tea possess anti-microbial properties that help keep your oral health intact and prevent related problems like bleeding gums, bad breath and plaque formation.
Black tea promotes the production of salivary enzymes. If you consume black tea regularly, it can lower inflammation, prevent cavities, and stop the growth of bacteria.
A study suggests that rinsing the mouth with black tea for 30 seconds, five times, at a 3-minute interval, reduces plaque bacteria from developing.
Doctors recommend drinking a cup or two of unsweetened black tea with water as it helps destroy and surpass bacteria that cause bad breath and tooth decay.
Black Tea for Weight Loss
People have found a new reason to drink black tea – weight loss!
A study evaluates inter-relationships between tea compounds and the gut microbiome. It also suggests that black tea works as a probiotic that aids digestive processes. Black tea has only two calories per cup with 0% cholesterol and saturated fat.
The molecules of black tea are more significant than the other tea types. It means that black tea molecules spend more time in the small intestine. The presence of these molecules in the small intestine helps increase the amounts of good bacteria and microorganisms in the gut microbiome. As a result, the liver tissues burn fat more efficiently.
Furthermore, black tea is considered a weight-loss beverage because it contains the highest concentration of caffeine among all the tea categories. A cup of black tea contains about 47 milligrams of caffeine. Caffeine boosts energy and increases the metabolic rate. Therefore, drinking black tea before your workout may help your body perform better and shed those extra pounds faster.
Caffeine also raises body temperature, also known as ‘thermogenesis.’ When the temperature increases, it triggers reactions in the body that results in improved metabolism of nutrients and vitamins, and ultimately, fat burning.
The calorie count in black tea is almost negligible. Replacing high-calorie beverages and drinks like juice and soda with black tea can help one lose weight quickly. Since black tea contains flavonoids, it can help improve fat distribution.

Nutmeg
Oral Care
Dental plaque is a primary factor in causing dental caries and periodontal disease. Streptococcus and lactobacillus bacterial species are generally responsible for dental caries. Meanwhile, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Campylobacter rectus are chronic periodontitis. Studies suggest that nutmeg contains the active compounds macelignan and trimyristin. These compounds possess exquisite anti-carcinogenic and antibacterial activities. These properties are beneficial against oral pathogenic bacteria. Ethyl acetate and ethanol crude extract from the flesh, seed, and mace of nutmeg help prevent and control dental caries and periodontal disease. In addition, the woody aroma helps to treat the bad breath.
Treats Sleep Disorder
Insomnia is a sleep disorder where the person finds it difficult to fall asleep. It is generally a sign of somatic and psychic illness. It impairs cognitive and physical functioning as well as affects their work performance. The host typically suffers several negative consequences because of insomnia.
In a study on insomnia, people without any systemic illnesses were given 2g of nutmeg powder for two weeks to assess the improvement in sleep. There were minimal changes in the participants’ sleep quality after a week of intake of nutmeg powder. But by the end of the second week, the results had improved significantly. Follow-up after three months shows that after stopping the intake of nutmeg powder, the study saw a maintained sleep induction.
Hepatoprotective Activity
Various drugs and pollutants affect liver functioning, which leads to hepatitis or cirrhosis. Therefore, it is essential to protect the liver by using hepatoprotective substances. In a study on rats with liver damage caused by LPS and D-GaIN, researchers fed them 21 different spices to evaluate their hepatoprotective properties. Myristicin, an essential oil found in nutmeg, possesses excellent hepatoprotective properties and efficiently suppresses LPS/D-GaIN. Furthermore, after assessing plasma aminotransferase activities, the observation was that nutmeg contains liver-protecting activities.
Researchers performed another study to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of aqueous nutmeg extract against ISO-induced oxidative stress. ISO causes myocardial necrosis and depletion of tissue enzymes. Due to the necrosis and leakage, there’s an increase in diagnostic indicators like ALT, ALP, AST, CK, GGT of MI, and hepatotoxicity. According to the same study, nutmeg extract significantly increases antioxidant activities to prevent oxidative stress. Nutmeg decreases the marker enzymes, prevents the damage induced by ISO, and stops the leakage of marker enzymes. Nutmeg aqueous extracts can protect the liver against experimental hepatic studies because of their hepatoprotective effect.
There’s another study that shows the protective effects of nutmeg extracts, and in which they also found an active compound, myrislignan, in nutmeg. Nutmeg extracts effectively prevent TAA-induced liver damage, decrease hepatic oxidative stress, and lower hepatic inflammation.
Relieves Chronic Pain
Chronic pain usually occurs due to chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and other inflammatory conditions. Nutmeg exhibits free radical scavenging, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities and helps in soothing the already existing chronic pain. The nutmeg contains myristicin, elemicin, safrole, and eugenol compounds. These compounds in the nutmeg oil help treat swelling, inflammation, joint pain, muscle spasms, pains, and sores. It is a potent chronic inflammation and pain reliever.
Studies suggest that nutmeg oil contains monoterpenes that are beneficial for easing inflammation and pain. Monoterpenes reduce the inflammatory pain induced by CFA injection. In addition, it helps in reducing joint swelling, pain resulting from a stimulus, and conditions with increased pain sensitivity.
With these benefits, nutmeg also helps lower cholesterol levels, improve blood pressure and blood circulation, and boost digestion. But, traditional uses of nutmeg seeds confer the treatment of haemorrhoids, chronic vomiting, rheumatism, cholera, psychosis, stomach cramps, nausea, and anxiety.
